Step 1 : Set your criteria
We wanted:
- a house (not a motor home)
- must be 4×4
- needs to be affordable (our whole build cost less than a Toyota Landcruiser and caravan)
- must maximise off grid living ability
Could we afford a brand new base vehicle? Short answer – No! So we picked up a nearly new 4×4 truck for less than 1/3 of the cost of a new vehicle at the auctions houses.
This truck had only driven 120,000km so had basically just been ‘run in’. It’s former life was building railways and it used to have little railway wheels on hydraulic rams to drive on the railway track. That’s what the bottom lip ‘bull bar’ is from. We just repurposed that space to house our front winch.

We have built all kinds of motor homes over the years, from Mecedes Sprinter vans to Toyota Coaster buses. The House Truck is a culmination of a lifetime of research, trial and error and testing to culminate in a solution that suits our needs:
A home on wheels that will go anywhere!
But how did we do this??? It does seem like a minor miracle because I’m a MUSIC TEACHER by trade and my wife is a physiotherapist.
